From your post I understant that your MacBook Pro is unexpectedly shutting down. I definitely understand how this is a frustrating issue, so to begin troubleshooting, I'd like you to please reset the SMC on the Mac. I have reincarnated as a dragoness?! mac os.

Resetting the SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own
Note: Portable computers that have a battery you should not remove on your own include MacBook Pro (Early 2009) and later, all models of MacBook Air, and MacBook (Late 2009).
- Shut down the computer.
- Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
- On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
- Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
- Press the power button to turn on the computer.
Note: The LED on the MagSafe power adapter may change states or temporarily turn off when you reset the SMC.

Assuming its not OS9 then you can use a Linux distro to read it and copy the data.
Same thing, pull the disk, plug it into an external reader and boot something up to read the data off of it.
Since most Linux dist's won't write to NTFS probably need 2 USB's, one for the source and one to copy to.
Fat32 is fine, the Mac will read that when you go to put the data back.
The question is, does the Mac boot up and work? If so just Time Machine it to the external USB drive, replace the drive, and Time Machine it back.
